The Inspiration Behind the Retro Trailer Holiday Greeting Card
It all started with my neighbor. We’ve never met, I don’t know his name, but I have a crush on his car. A vintage bright yellow Volkswagen Beetle. It was always parked on our street where I could walk by real slow and get a good look. It just made me happy. The little yellow blast-from-the-past really stood out among all the other modern vehicles lining the curb.
That’s where the idea for this holiday card started. Something simple that makes me smile is all I need for inspiration. The yellow punch buggy was it.
If you have dogs, you know taking the pup out for a walk is a daily choir/ritual/relief. I walk the dogs once a day, so it’s hard not to notice the happenings around the neighborhood. This neighbor of mine, works on his vintage VW Beetle every evening in his garage. The door is up, so I can see the workshop from the sidewalk where I push the stroller and wrangle the dogs.
The most fascinating thing on my walks is what people have in their garages. It’s amazing how garages here in Southern California rarely hold cars. No, that would be way too obvious. Garages are now straight up storage. I do it too, it’s great. But what I’m interested by is when a garage goes way beyond storage and turns into a full on hoarding situation. Seriously, wall to wall and all the way up to the ceiling. Full of stuff. I thought this was a rare find, but there’s quite a few around here, at least in my neighborhood. It’s none of my business, but when the garage door is up, it’s hard not to look!
Back to the punch buggy. It got me feeling all the Americana-nostalgia-road trip feels. So I decided to pair the vintage Beetle with a vintage camper trailer. Campers are really making a comeback lately! Some fabulous local San Diego examples are The Holidays and Camera Camper.
The only thing left was to bring in the holiday cheer! So I drew the Christmas tree on the roof rack and string lights on the camper. Lastly, just for good measure, I added the “On Holiday” sign hanging from the door knob, just to be extra clear these folks were hitting the road for some winter wonderland fun.
This neon green and red letterpress card is a favorite of travelers and vintage car lovers.
Enjoy!

P.S.
Punch buggy yellow, no punch backs! If you have no idea what the Punch Buggy Game is, read the rules here. It was a road trip staple in my childhood. We loved this game, because it allowed you to hit your siblings. It’s in the rules, so it’s okay.
